Executives

At Barratt American, our goal is to always exceed expectations in everything we do, from the quality and design of our homes to customer service to our role as good citizens in the community. We invite you to meet three of the leaders who guide our company in putting that vision into practice every day.

Michael D. 'Mick' Pattinson
Michael D. "Mick" Pattinson
CEO & Principal

Mick Pattinson grew up in a close-knit family in a working-class section of England. Despite years of hard work, his parents could never afford to buy a home. This left a lasting impression on Mick and fueled his passion to make a difference in the home building industry. In 1976, Pattinson began his career at the Barratt Group in Great Britain, where he quickly rose as a salesperson and group sales director. Just eight years later he became a division president for Barratt American. A protégé of the company's founder Sir Lawrie Barratt, Pattinson shares his mentor's passion for helping people achieve home ownership, especially first-time buyers. In 1991, Pattinson was named president and CEO of Barratt American. In his leadership role, he extols the benefits of home ownership as a stable, attractive place to raise a family and a valuable investment to parlay into future homes. He is also a tireless champion for the home building industry. It is no surprise that Pattinson was elected to the California Building Industry Hall of Fame in 2003.

Stephen R. Reid
CFO & Principal

When Steve Reid worked as an accountant at a prestigious accounting firm, he considered Barratt to be a great client. Little did he know that Barratt would become a great place for his own career and values to flourish. Yet as he worked with the Barratt team, he was as impressed by the inspiring figures of Sir Lawrie Barratt and Mick Pattinson as he was by the numerical figures on the balance sheet. Not long after, Reid joined Barratt in order to work with Mick Pattinson, moving up into positions as finance director and CFO. Now, more than 23 years after that pivotal career change, Reid serves as CFO of Barratt American where he provides financial stewardship for the company. Reid is a firm believer that face-to-face contact is every bit as important as strong financial statements. That's why you'll see Reid outside the corporate offices, maintaining strong relationships with lenders and the community at large.

J. Michael Armstrong
Principal and
General Counsel

As an attorney, Mike Armstrong is committed to upholding the legal system. Therefore, he is deeply concerned by an increasing trend: misusing regulations simply to block the building of new houses. As general counsel for Barratt American, Armstrong helps spearhead the company's leading role in legislative, environmental and litigation reform. He's proud to be part of Barratt American's success in changing construction defect litigation for condominiums. The result is that many new condominium projects are now being green-lighted for Southern California - a market that's starved for affordable housing. And while Armstrong is a strong advocate for the home building industry, he also seeks win-win solutions such as protecting wildlife while making affordable housing more plentiful. Like most Barratt executives, Armstrong has been part of the Barratt family for years. Prior to joining the company in 1981, Armstrong worked for one of the firms purchased by Barratt American and was previously in private practice.

Division Presidents

Barratt American is dedicated to diversity in housing, lifestyles and locations. That's why our four divisions are led by presidents who are experts in home building with specialized knowledge that makes them feel right at home in their regions of Southern California.

Robert Cummings
President
San Diego Division

Bob was born and raised in San Diego and received his undergraduate degree from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD in 1981. After graduation, he became a Naval Flight Officer, flying the carrier based S-3 Viking jet, serving in the Navy for 9 years. After his active duty military service, he received his MBA from the University of San Diego and worked as a project manager for Patrick Development for 5 years. He joined K. Hovnanian Homes in 1995 as a project manager and subsequently became the Senior Community Manager, Director of Land Acquisition and was San Diego Area President for the last three years prior to joining Barratt American. He is also a board member of the San Diego BIA.

Lou Ochoa
President
Inland Empire Division

Some people advance their careers from the ground up. Lou Ochoa proudly says he learned his skills from the dirt up. At age 15, he got his first construction job as a part-time laborer. Throughout his swiftly rising career in home building, Ochoa has worn many hats as a customer service rep, construction superintendent, project manager and general manager. Ochoa was named president of Barratt's Inland Empire Division in 2004. A Southern California native, he is a second-generation member of the building industry.

Larry Clemens
President
Urban Division

A third-generation San Diegan, Larry Clemens holds a bachelor's degree in public administration from San Diego State University. He is a past president of the San Diego Building Industry Association, and currently serves as a director of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Partnership, and the Downtown YMCA. He is active in the Building Industry Urban Council, Lambda Alpha International and the Urban Land Institute. Clemens was responsible for the premier Carlsbad master-planned communities of Aviara, Bressi Ranch and Kelly Ranch. Most recently, as president of Lennar/San Diego Urban Division, Clemens helped lead the effort in entitling Ball Park Village in San Diego's burgeoning East Village.

Robert W. Laing
President
Land Aquisition Division

Robert W. Laing has spearheaded efforts to address growth trends in the U.K. as well as in the U.S.A. He brings a track record of success from London where he was involved in several urban renewal projects. In fact, Barratt American's former parent company has been at the vanguard of Britain's urban renaissance, having been rejuvenating its towns and cities for 30 years. Prior to being named president of Barratt's Urban Division in 2004, Laing was director of Barratt's land acquisition and played a key role in the initiation of new suburban projects. He has an extensive background in civil engineering and construction.
